For a technician performing a repair, the process is largely automated by the IDS software. The system is designed to prevent a technician from accidentally "bricking" a module (rendering it inoperable).

When you install this used module, the security systems (like PATS—Passive Anti-Theft System) will see a VIN mismatch. You cannot simply flash over the new calibration files. You must perform a specific PMI process that allows the tool to first "unmarry" the donor VIN from the module and then install the correct As-Built data and calibrations for your specific chassis. Failing to do this will result in a no-start condition. This is one of the hardest tasks for non-dealer tools.

Never, ever use a calibration file that did not come directly from Ford’s server for your specific VIN and current hardware revision.

You must never attempt to program a Ford module using only battery power or a standard trickle charger. Modern modules can pull massive amounts of current during a flash, and voltage drops will corrupt the calibration file transfer.

Ensure the vehicle battery is fully charged. Use a stable, high-quality battery maintainer (charger) during programming. A voltage drop can ruin a module.

Select the appropriate calibration file for the vehicle’s VIN and engine type. You cannot simply flash over the new calibration files
